Genuine Alpine villages still exist, and Saanen is one of them — a distinction it owes largely to its harmonious village appearance. The homely chalets belong here, just like the mountains and cattle, giving the holiday region of Saanenland its timeless charm. When a village and its people remain true to themselves — that is, when they exude genuine Alpine character — guests and visitors feel happy and at home in turn. The architecture of the Saanenland upholds the traditions of the region and contributes to this sense of well-being.

The beautiful Bauten-style chalets are one of the hallmarks of the Saanenland. Rich ornamentation and flower decorations on the balconies in summer are among its hallmarks. Since the 1960s, legislation has attached great importance to retaining the typical character of the villages. Today the Saanenland people construct the majority of the new chalets in red brick, but then clad them with timber. That is what gives the villages such a warm and homely feel. Even if they don't all conform to the original "Saanenhaus" template, they nevertheless remain true to the broader approach to chalet-building.
